About Volato Brazil
Volato is a Brazilian aircraft company established by its founder, Engineer Zizo Sola, whose aspiration was to produce one of the finest composite aircraft available. For many years, Zizo kept a magazine detailing the specifications of Richard Trickel’s TR4 on his bedside table. He had already been constructing a composite plane with the assistance of Engineer Marcos Vilela, owner of Ciel Fiberglass, which has produced composite parts for Embraer planes since 2001.
In 2009, Zizo traveled to El Salvador to meet Richard, a renowned aircraft builder who had produced and constructed over 300 TR4 kits that are now operational worldwide. During their meeting, Richard proposed, “How would you like to build a new plane based on the KIS TR4 in Brazil with my assistance?” Upon returning to Brazil, Zizo collaborated with Marcos, and together in 2010, they founded Volato Aircraft and Composite Parts.
The partnership with Richard continued until the Volato 400 was completed. Unfortunately, Richard passed away from cancer in Brazil just after the airplane’s inaugural flight. However, Zizo and Marcos were determined to preserve Richard’s legacy and proceeded with the production and development of the Volato 400 over the following 15 years. Today, the company has partnered with various distributors, such as Volato Aircraft Sales USA, to introduce their aircraft to the global market, much like Richard Trickel did with the KIS TR4.
Committed to innovation, Volato remains dedicated to designing and developing new aircraft models such as the Volato 400. The company is currently preparing to relocate to a larger 40,000-square-foot manufacturing facility to support its growth and expansion efforts.
T.J. Welch, President of the company, is a retired airline and military pilot with FAA Airline Transport Pilot Ratings for Boeing 727, 737, 747, 757, 767, 777, and Airbus 319/320 aircraft. He also holds a Commercial/Instrument Helicopter rating. With over fifty years of continuous experience in Air Transport, Military, or General Aviation involving both fixed-wing and rotary-wing aircraft, Mr. Welch brings considerable expertise to Volato Aircraft Sales USA. He stated that the company is partnering with some of the world’s most reputable aviation companies to guarantee the success of the Volato 400. His primary objective is to offer customers an affordable, yet exceptionally safe and advanced homebuilt experimental aircraft, while also ensuring a pleasant purchase and build experience.
Reflecting on his journey, he stated, "I developed an interest in aviation at a very young age, starting with building model airplanes. I completed my first solo flight on my 16th birthday, 50 years ago. Building my experimental airplane as an adult was an equally amazing experience. Volato Aircraft Sales USA’s partnership with ABAC and Volato Brazil provides interested pilots the opportunity for that same experience."
James Johnson, the Vice President is the other side to this silver dollar partnership bringing the designing, building and imagination to help advance the amazing attributes and capabilities of the Volato 400 for the US market. His ability to adapt /overcome any challenge and follow through with every project was cultivated through years of service in the Navy Special Forces, Construction Battalions, as a Firefighter Paramedic/Engineer while also being a Contractor. Aviation has been his quiet passion that is now taking the spot light. "He was once told that you can either fly planes or build them, but you can't do both." Well, Mr. Johnson never settles for good enough when something can be done better and with the Volato 400 and its fast-built times, he is able to do both and both better.
James is the Team builder bringing together all the people, resources and vendors to build an amazing aircraft. He believes that great success comes from great partnerships. Mr. Welch and Volato Aircraft in Brazil (where the kits are hand crafted) are the foundation to that success and that partnering with ABAC, UL Power Engines, Beringer, Garmin, Aithre and a dozen other suppliers will insure success for every owner of a Volato 400 providing access to the latest and greatest when building their kit plane.
